Fruits and vegetables are essential for healthy living. Below are common fruits in Nigerian markets and there nutritional value.
PAWPAW
The papaya is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya, and is one of the 22 accepted species in the genus Carica of the plant family Caricaceae.
In a 100 gram serving, papaya fruit provides 43 calories and is a significant source of vitamin C (75% of the Recommended Daily Allowance) and a moderate source of folate (10%).
Papaya contains about 6% of the level of beta carotene found in carrots.
The black seeds of the papaya are edible and have a sharp, spicy taste. They are sometimes ground and used as a substitute for black pepper.
In some parts of the world, papaya leaves are made into tea as a treatment for malaria, but the mechanism is not understood and no treatment method based on these results has been scientifically proven.
PINEAPPLE
The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit. . ananas, the original name of the fruit, comes from the Tupi word nanas, meaning "excellent fruit," (an excellent fruit indeed).
In a 100 gram serving, raw pineapple is an excellent source of manganese (44% Daily Value (DV)) and vitamin C (58% DV), but otherwise contains no essential nutrients in significant content.
The fruit itself is quite perishable and if it is stored at room temperature, it should be used within two days; however, if it is refrigerated, the time span extends to five to seven days.
A pineapple will never become any riper than it was when harvested.
In the 18th century, because of the expense of direct import and the enormous cost in equipment and labour required to grow them in a temperate climate, using hothouses called "pineries", pineapples soon became a symbol of wealth. They were initially used mainly for display at dinner parties, rather than being eaten, and were used again and again until they began to rot (na wa for this people o!!!!!!).
The pineapple leaves are used to produce the textile fiber piña in the Philippines, commonly used as the material for the men's Barong Tagalog and women's Baro't saya formal wear in the country
During the Chinese New Year, the pineapple represents wealth, luck, excellent fortune and gambling luck (All my guys take note).
Avocadoes
They have a green-skinned, fleshy body that may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical. Commercially, they ripen after harvesting.
A typical serving of avocado (100 g) is moderate to rich in several B vitamins and vitamin K, with good content of vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium and diverse fats.
For a typical avocado:
ü About 75% of energy comes from fat, most of which (67% of total fat) is monounsaturated fat as oleic acid.
ü Other predominant fats include palmitic acid and linoleic acid. The saturated fat content amounts to 14% of the total fat.
ü Typical total fat composition is roughly: 1% ω-3 (omega-3), 14% ω-6 (omega-6), 71% ω-9 (65% oleic and 6% palmitoleic), and 14% saturated fat (palmitic acid).
Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats help to lower levels of total cholesterol and ‘Bad’ cholesterol in the blood. Other foods containing unsaturated fats include nuts and vegetable oils (such as olive and canola oils).
Although costly to produce, nutrient-rich avocado oil has diverse uses for salads or cooking and in cosmetics and soap products.
Cucumber
The cucumber is originally from Southern Asia, but now grows on most continents.
Cucumbers are usually more than 90% water.
In a 100 gram serving, raw cucumber (with peel) is 95% water, provides 16 calories and supplies low content of essential nutrients, as it is notable only for vitamin K (16% of the Recommended Daily Allowance).
In the later 17th century, a prejudice developed against uncooked vegetables and fruits. A number of articles in contemporary health publications stated that uncooked plants brought on summer diseases and should be forbidden to children. The cucumber kept this reputation for an inordinate period of time: “fit only for consumption by cows,” which some believe is why it gained the name, cowcumber.
Mango
It is the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, and the national tree of Bangladesh.
Fresh mango contains a variety of nutrients, but only vitamin C and folate are in significant amounts, providing 44% and 11%, respectively of the Recommended Daily Allowance .
In India, harvest and sale of mangoes is during March–May and this is annually covered by news agencies.
In the West Indies, the expression "to go mango walk" means to steal another person's mango fruits. This is celebrated in the famous song, "The Mango Walk" , guess we should start "to go petrol walk" in Nigeria.
Water melons
Watermelon fruit is 91% water, contains 6% sugars, and is low in fat.
In a 100 gram serving, watermelon fruit supplies 30 calories and low amounts of essential nutrients (table). Only vitamin C is present in appreciable content at 10% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.
China is the world's single largest watermelon producer.
The largest recorded fruit was grown in Tennessee in 2013 and weighed 159 kilograms (351 pounds).
The Oklahoma State Senate passed a bill in 2007 declaring watermelon as the official state vegetable, with some controversy about whether it is a vegetable or a fruit.
BANANA
Raw bananas are 75% water, 23% carbohydrates, including 12% sugars, 1% protein and 0.3% fat, providing 89 Calories (kcal) per 100 gram amount. Bananas are an excellent source (20% or more of the Recommended Daily Allowance ) of vitamin B6 (31%) and contain moderate amounts of manganese (13%), vitamin C and dietary fiber (10% each).
Although bananas are commonly thought to supply exceptional potassium content, they actually are relatively low (358 mg per 100 g, 8% of RDA) compared to numerous common foods, such as beans, milk, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
In 1999 archaeologists in London discovered what they believed to be the oldest banana in the UK.
In economics, a banana republic is a country operated as a commercial enterprise for private profit, in which the profit derived from the private exploitation of public lands is private property, while the debts incurred thereby are a public responsibility. This unbalanced economy tends to cause the national currency to become devalued paper-money, rendering the country ineligible for international-development credit.
The history of the first banana republic began with the introduction of the banana to the US in 1870, by Lorenzo Dow Baker, captain of the schooner Telegraph. He initially bought bananas in Jamaica and sold them in Boston at a 1,000 percent profit.
Traditionally in Tamil marriages, banana plants are tied on both sides of the entrance of houses to bless the newlyweds to be useful to each other.
enjoy your day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
