The inspiration to
write this came from a call i received from a friend. He said he noticed some whitish
discharge from his penis about a week after having sex with his girlfriend, and
wanted to know what is was. From the history, it was most likely gonorrhoea ( a
sexually transmitted disease), so i told him, and also asked him to go to a
hospital with his
girlfriend and both of them should get treatment. When he
approached his girlfriend, guess her response? The girl said his body was not strong,
that she doesn’t have a problem. Will called this ignorance or foolishness? Well
my friend got treatment and yes the relationship ended.
Most women carry
genital tract infections today, but do not know. They notice some ‘slight’
changes in their body, but because it is not ‘disturbing’, they ignore it.
Over time, genital
tract infections in women (especially chlamydial and gonococcal infections)
develop to what is called pelvic inflammatory disease. This occurs when the
infection goes ‘upwards’ to involve the cervix, endometrium (lining of the
womb), fallopian tubes, ovaries and the entire pelvis.
This causes damage to
the fallopian tubes, and can increase your risk for ectopic pregnancy. Over time,
this fallopian tube is blocked and infertility becomes an issue.
What are the signs
and symptoms of ectopic pregnancy?
· Pain in the lower
abdomen and pelvis.
· Pain during sex.
· Fever
· Heavy menstrual
bleeding.
· Bleeding when it is
not time for your period (this is called inter-menstrual bleeding).
If you have these
signs, i suggest you see your doctor.
Powerful guide to decrease your
risk for PID
· Abstinence: My Professor will say this is unrealistic in our world today.
· Be faithful to one partner: This is increasingly
becoming difficult because you can never be sure of your partner, unless trust
has been built. In fact it is very risky.
· Use a condom: This you can trust. Protects against
pregnancy as well, which is not even desired, in relationships other than
marriage. Risk for any STI is greater outside marriage than in marriage; on the
other hand, your risk for STIs might actually increase because you will now be
having sex without a condom, something you probably never tried as a single
person. If unfortunately for you, your partner is unfaithful, you get a full
dose.
Early diagnosis and
treatment of PID is very important.
Things you should do
after getting a diagnosis of PID
· Bring your partner
for treatment because you maybe re-infected if he is not treated.
· Use of condoms in
future is advisable.
· If you are pregnant, seek medical care as the
pregnancy might be ectopic (outside the womb).
· Your risk for
infertility and ectopic pregnancy increases each time you get another epispde.
