Wellness although used to describe health, does not mean the same thing as health. Health by itself, means a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not just the absence of disease. whereas health is a state, wellness is a lifestyle. Wellness is gaining a general balance in all six health dimensions. To the experts, “wellness” is concerned with its six different dimensions, namely: physical, emotional (
mental), intellectual, social, environmental, and spiritual health. These dimensions should be in the right kind of harmony so that one will achieve a sense of well-being. The choices we make everyday determine how well we are. Our wellness status is always changing, depending on the choices we make. Make the right choices today.
Maintaining physical health
Your physical health has to do with the way your body organs work. it is critical for our wellbeing, and it is the most visible of all the health dimensions. Most problems with our health appear physically.
Below are ways that each key area of physical
health can be addressed through lifestyle choices:
Physical activity: This should
include both leisure activities and structured forms of exercises. Examples of
leisurely physical activity include doing house chores, walking, e.t.c.
Examples of more structured forms of exercise include strength training,
running, and other sports.
Nutrition and diet: A
well-balanced diet should contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and
minerals. Fluid, ideally in the form of clean water, should be regularly
consumed. Meals and snacks should be consumed throughout the day, and portion
sizes should be sensible.
Alcohol and drugs: Avoid these substances
because they alter mood or other bodily processes.
Rest and sleep: While regular activity is essential
for physical health, allowing the body to rest is just as important. Sleep
should take place in a quiet, dark environment and should last approximately
7-9 hours.
Emotional health
Strong feelings such as love or anger are described as emotions. Emotional health can be maintained by being mindful of thoughts and feelings, managing emotions effectively, coping with stress in a healthy way and loving everybody around you.
Intellectual health
This has to do with the way you reason and think. Intellectual health offers you knowledge and skills required to live a successful life. Reading, playing games, debate and learning new skills all help improve your intellectual health.
Social health
It is said that man is a social animal, therefore your social health is essential to enhancing interaction with people around you. Social health helps you maintain lasting relationships with people. it also affects physical health, as maybe noticed after ending a relationship. Improving your social health should start with ending bad relationships, as these tend to put a strain on your social health. Striving to achieve your goals and helping others do the same is a good way to also improve your social health.
Environmental health
This dimension of health is very important as it can affect every other dimension in a unique way. It involves the air you breathe, the food you eat, the water you drink, your level of exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins in the environment, and maintaining good personal hygiene.
Spiritual health
Finally, we all have to believe in a God. This dimension of health is required for support in difficult situations, when all hope is lost and every other dimension is threatened.
